CABINET
Second half of the 16th century
The top sides and falling front are of cypress wood and the drawers and cupboard doors of cedar. The front is inlaid in black composition with a scrolled cartouche in the centre, amid festoons, birds and floral ornament, and the following inscription round three sides: - (CO)CORDIA RES PARVAE CRESCUNT DISCORDIA MAXIME DILABUNTER; the whole is surrounded by a border of floral scrollwork; the sides are both similarly ornamented with a vase. The interior contains eleven drawers and two cupboards, the fronts of which (except two) are inlaid with scrolled cartouches. The remaining two are similarly decorated with twisted cables, forming a guilloche pattern. Below in the centre is an open space with a depressed arch in front supported on two half-turned balusters. The falling front is fitted with a lock plate, decorated with baluster ornament and scrolls, and a drop handle. Each of the drawers has a similar handle, and the cupboard lock-escutcheon scrolled at the edges. On each side of the cupboard is a large drop-handle. The mounts are of tin-iron. The cabinet rests on a modern four-legged stand.
