‘The Old Farmhouse’
About 1860
Bedford worked as a draftsman and lithographer
before taking up photography. His photographs,
like many made in Britain at this time, adopted
the ‘Picturesque’ themes and subjects that the
previous generation of artists had shown in
paintings and drawings. However, photography
gave renewed ambition to the quest to convey the
feeling and textures of nature through the eye.
