Place of origin |
Louis Oscar Roty, a leading French medallist, revived the Renaissance plaquette format very successfully in 19th century France. By adding a second side to this plaquette he replicated the traditional two-sided format of the commemorative medal while revolutionising its shape.
The obverse (primary face) of the plaquette shows a portrait of French politician Émile Demagny (as the inscription shows, Secretary General of the Ministry of the Interior) set within a circular laurel wreath, profile to left. The plaquette is signed and dated 'O. Roty 1902' at the truncation of the bust. Below at the left is the lamp of knowledge illuminating a map of France, together with land-surveying equipment resting on a laurel branch. The inscription reads: VMVM HVIC RES PUBLICA (the state is the only thing this man is interested in). On the reverse, a half-draped male figure reaches down from the top of a rocky outcrop to rescue three figures below. The inscription here reads: DVCE ALIIS PORRIGERE MANVM (it is pleasant/sweet to stretch out your hand to others).
