Place of origin

A large glass rummer on a short stem with ball knop and plain circular foot. The bowl is engraved with a scene from Burns' poem 'Tam O'Shanter', a portrait of the poet Robert Burns above a cap and swag inscribed CALEDONIA with thistle and rose, and a small panel depicting Burns' cottage at Alloway, South Ayrshire where the poet was born on 25th January 1759. A large cartouche engraved with PRESENTED BY BROTHER JOHN COLLINGWOOD TO THE CALEDONIAN SOCIETY JANY 25th 1821, was probably engraved at a later date than the production date, and by someone less skilled than the engraver who did the decoration.
