Music sheet for Les Huguenots, Quadrille by Charles d'Albert , ca. 19th century.
The popularity of sheet music was partly due to the increase in ownership of pianos, especially after the introduction of upright pianos ca. 1827. ‘Pianomania’ spread among the middle-income levels of society during the 1840s which provided a market for more expensive music sheets.
