The figures portray a moment in the pas de deux with the Firebird on pointe in attitude pulling away from the Tsarevich. Two black figures mounted on Japanese tissue window mounted on blue/grey paper mounted on brown paper folded as if a greetings card. Part of the silver border is missing.
The Firebird (L’Oiseau de feu) was created for Diaghilev’s Ballets Russes in 1910 and revived for de Basil’s Ballets Russes using the 1926 designs by Natalia Goncharova on 28 April 1934. For the de Basil company the Firebird wore a short tutu.
Shadow puppeteer, Lotte Reiniger (1899-1981) created silhouettes of De Basil’s Ballets Russes for illustrations in periodicals and as souvenirs sold through the book dealer Ifan Kyrle Fletcher. The folder this work came in gives the price for The Firebird silhouettes at ‘3gns each’.
