Gallery label | In 1699 George London began to design a garden for Castle Howard, a new house for the 3rd Earl of Carlisle. When the earl switched architects, London altered his plans for the garden accordingly. The first drawing [E.434-1951] shows the house as it was first designed by the architect William Talman. The second drawing [E.433-1951] shows the house as it was designed and built by John Vanbrugh. That London remained in favour throughout suggests that he and the earl had a good creative relationship. They decided the final details of the garden together. |
