Place of origin

Original sketch for Punch Magazine by William Kerridge Haselden (1872-1953), showing Mr. Frederick Ashton in a scene from Saudade do Brésil at the Lyric Theatre, Hammersmith, 2nd July 1930.

Saudade do Brésil was a solo with a Latin flavour that Frederick Ashton created for himself to music by Darius Milhaud (from Saudades do Brasil, for piano 1920-21). The costume was designed by William Chappell.

Saudade do Brésil appears to have been first performed on 23 June 1930 at the Lyric Theatre Hammersmith and was also presented during the opening season of the Ballet Club in 1931. The solo was described in the Daily Telegraph as a dance ‘somewhat in the Massine manner…inspired by Milhaud’s amusing dissonances’.

The cartoon by Haselden originally published in Punch was subsequently reproduced in David Vaughan Frederick Ashton and his ballets London: Black 1977 revised and updated London: Dance Books, 1999 p.40.
