Bells of this type are called gokorei in Japanese. They were used along with other implements in the rituals of the Tendai and Shingon sects of the Buddhist religion, whose teachings were introduced from China in the 9th century AD. Their ring is said to symbolise the awakening of the original Buddha-nature in each individual, and to illustrate the relationship between the illusory world and ultimate reality, the sound representing the transitory nature of phenomena.
