This botanical print is by Robert Austin (1895-1973). A highly skilled draughtsman, he is best known for his exquisite etchings and engravings, mostly of animals, birds and plants, domestic scenes, figure subjects (often religious), and also landscapes. One of the foremost etchers and engravers of the twentieth century, Austin studied printmaking at the RCA under Frank Short and went on to the British School in Rome between 1922-6. Initially and etcher, he later developed an interest in the 15th and 16th century German masters and as a result turned to engraving.
