Physical description

A mounted black and white topographical photograph of an interior in the ruins of the Great Iwan, at Hatra, Iraq, with a detail of a pilaster with ovolo moulded string course above three carved bas-relief masks in Room 12 on the north wall. The protruding heads, two over one, each have distinct features.

Object history note

The 1912 entry in the Museum Ledger records the following description: 'Hatra (Northern Mesopotamia): South liwan; north wall of [Date c. I-II centy. A.D.]'. This photograph is part of a set of forty-two prints (1626 to 1667-1912) presented by Gertrude Lowthian Bell, the photographer.
