Physical description

A mounted black and white topographical photograph of an encampment outside the ruins of the Great Iwan at Hatra, Iraq. There is a single large tent, surrounded by tribal figures and soldiers, wild horses, sand bags, crates and supplies. Two tribal figures lie in the foreground surrounded by rope and supplies.

Object history note

The 1912 entry in the Museum Ledger records the following description: 'Hatra (Northern Mesopotamia): Palace, south side; from east [Date c. I-II centy. A.D.]'. This photograph is part of a set of forty-two prints (1626 to 1667-1912) presented by Gertrude Lowthian Bell, the photographer.
