A mounted black and white topographical photograph of the detail of a carved arch into Room 13 in the Great Iwan in the ruins at Hatra, Iraq. The carving begins at the impost or capital and is formed of rows of stylized acanthus leaves and the arch itself has bas-relief portrait busts on each keystone, heavily eroded and edged with an ornamental ovolo and foliate moulding. There is rubble in the foreground.

Object history
The 1912 entry in the Museum Ledger records the following description: 'Hatra (Northern Mesopotamia): North liwan, south side [Date c. I-II centy. A.D.]'. This photograph is part of a set of forty-two prints (1626 to 1667-1912) presented by Gertrude Lowthian Bell, the photographer.
