Physical description

Drawing in watercolour and sepia ink over pencil of a cat wearing a blue dress with leg-of-mutton sleeves and white apron and lace tucker, sitting on a white stool in front of a fireplace. She leans to take Edward VII Coronation teapot from the right hand side of the grate. Stone-flagged kitchen, with broom and mouse-traps in front left. Hanging on left are an umbrella and a 'Polly put the kettle on' kettle-holder. Fire-irons are on the range, kettle over the fire. A rabbit-skin rug is on the floor. China is on the trestle table to the right with a Dutch or Black Forest wall clock above. Cat, china and table are roughly sketched in pencil only, and clock mainly in pencil. Scene contained within heavy sepia frame.

Object history note

Drawn by Beatrix Potter probably in 1902 at Lakefield Cottage (Ees Wyke). Given by Leslie Linder (1904-1973) to the National Book League (now the Book Trust) in 1970 as part of a representative selection of Beatrix Potter's work. This selection, comprising 279 drawings and 38 early editions and now known as the Linder Collection, was acquired on long-term loan by the Victoria and Albert Museum in 1989 and remains the property of a charitable trust, The Linder Trust.
