Charles Thurston Thompson, the first Official Photographer of the South Kensington Museum (later the V&A), was commissioned to photograph a collection of French and Italian Renaissance and decorative art assembled by the Toulouse lawyer Jules Soulages which was brought to England in 1855 and later acquired by the Museum. These photographs are some of the earliest examples of photographs documenting V&A objects and were a hallmark of the Museum's photographic service.
