Charles Thurston Thompson was the first Official Photographer of the South Kensington Museum (later the V&A). This print is an early example of one of the many photographs he produced documenting V&A objects. They were used as collection management tools. Copies were also made for the Art Library, where they were viewed as an important educational resource for scholars and artists. Photographs such as these were a hallmark of the Museum's photographic service.
