Object history
The sketchbook was given to George Richmond by Samuel Palmer, and bequeathed by the former to Mr. A. H. Palmer. Some of the designs in the book show the influence of Albert Durer and of William Blake very strongly. Samuel Palmer knew Blake's work already, though he did not see him for the first time till the 9th October 1824. It was with reference to this sketchbook that he wrote in 1824: "I will now begin a new sketchbook and, I hope, try to work with a child's simple feeling and with the industry of humility."
