Ewer

700-750 (made)
Artist/Maker
Place of origin

This ewer is made of low-fired earthenware. It has a cloud-shaped moulded decoration, and a handle and spout in the shape of a dragon. The surface is covered with a coloured lead glaze, also known as sancai or 'three colours'. Due to its soft and semi-porous body, this kind of vessel would not have been used for eating but was specifically made for burials; similar examples have been found in the graves of high status people all over China.
