The following is an excerpt from 'Artists of the Tudor Court' (1983): 'Charles Brandon, Duke of Suffolk (d. 1545), soldier and statesman, rose rapidly in Henry VIII's favour from his accession. Created Duke of Suffolk, 1514, he secretly married, 1515, the King's sister, Mary, widow of the French King François. Supported the King in the divorce proceedings and took part in several military exhibitions to France, including the capture of Boulogne, 1544. Two versions of this miniature are extant although the second version is not inscribed (rep. Reynolds, Connoisseur : Complete Period Guides, pl. 69 (c)). Condition makes it impossible to state which is the ad vivum version'.
