Gallery label | Lewis Carroll and his contemporaries referred to Alice’s Adventures in Wonderland as a fairy tale. Potter recalled receiving a copy of the book or its sequel when she was about six (Through the Looking-Glass was published that year – 1872). She found herself ‘immediately…absorbed’ by John Tenniel’s illustrations, and the story evidently inspired her. The White Rabbit behind Bill looks familiar in his blue coat.(November 2019) |
