Earrings were almost compulsory wear for women wearing traditional costume in the Catholic regions of Europe in the 19th century.

The crescent was one of the most popular designs everywhere. This example comes from Oporto, in the north of Portugal, where jewellery is still being made in traditional designs today, often using filigree, as here. It was bought for £1 5s. (the pair) at the International Exhibition, London, 1872.

Flat gold earring, consisting of two concentric filigree crescents with a third hanging loose between the other two. Hinged wire.
