Brooch

ca. 1870 (made)
Artist/Maker
Place of origin

Filigree, made of gold or silver, was a common technique in the jewellery worn with traditional costume in Europe. It also became popular in Britain in the 19th century, either in its original form, or in the form of souvenir jewellery, often adapted from traditional jewellery, which flourished in many places.

This brooch, described as coming from the Balearic Islands, was probably made as a souvenir for visitors, although it would have been equally acceptable to the local population. Gold filigree and seed pearls are still characteristic of Balearic jewellery.
