Religious medallions, often mounted in decorative filigree frames, were widely worn in Catholic Spain. They were often acquired as souvenirs at the numerous pilgrimage sites, and were used as amulets against all the dangers of daily life as much as aids to prayer.

This pendant contains a medallion with images of St. Peter the Apostle, and St. John the Baptist. Although it was described as Spanish when it was acquired in 1910, there is no direct connection between these two saints and Spain, and it is possible that it is Italian. The design of the filigree frame and the suspension loop are both typical of Italian work.

Physical description

Religious medallion set as a pendant in a silver filigree frame. The medallion is a vertical oval with an image of St Peter on one side, and St John the Baptist on the other. It is set in a hollow frame of open filigree curls, with a loop at the top made from a flat band of twisted wires. There is a plain ring looped through the band.
