Valarie and the Shadow, Tennessee

Photograph
2008 (photographed)
Artist/Maker
Place of origin

Lucas Foglia (b.1983) is a young American photographer. He grew up on a family farm in outside New York and currently lives in San Francisco. He holds a BA from Brown University and an MFA in photography from Yale University. A Natural Order (Nazraeli Press, 2012) is his first book.

This compelling work is from A Natural Order, a series of photographs of people living ‘off the grid’ in communities that strive to be self-sufficient. Valarie and the Shadow is a representative image from the series: it is carefully composed and demonstrates the photographer’s eye for light and colour. Like the series as a whole, the photograph provides a glimpse into a lifestyle unfamiliar to most viewers, yet does so in a sensitive, non-voyeuristic manner. The shadow in the foreground is somewhat ominous, yet the photograph suggests no clear narrative. On a formal level, the image is a study of the universal photographic themes of light and shadow.

Gallery 100 ‘A History of Photography’, 2014-2015, label text: Lucas Foglia (1983–) ‘Valarie and the Shadow, Tennessee’ 2008 Foglia’s project deals with Americans striving to be self sufficient, motivated by environmental concerns, economic collapse or religious conviction. The girl appears to be wearing the historic dress of the Amish religious community, signalling an alternative lifestyle. The shadow in the foreground adds an ominous note, suggesting a filmic narrative that remains mysterious and unresolved.
