The panda is the symbol of the World Wide Fund for Nature or World Wildlife Fund (WWF) an international organisation set up in 1961 to help protect wild animals and the environment. The original panda logo was designed by the naturalist Peter Scott (1909-1989) from preliminary sketches made by a Scottish naturalist, Gerald Watterson. The idea of using a panda was inspired by the arrival at London Zoo of the giant panda Chi Chi. He was transferred from Beijing Zoo and at the time was the only panda in captivity in Europe.
