Girl's Suit

1950s (designed and made)
Artist/Maker
Place of origin

Girl’s woollen winter suit. The woollen material is blue with a background shade of brown. The coat is double breasted and fastened with 6 brown buttons. There are two pockets which are both edged with brown. The collar is also edged with brown. There is a manufacturers label in the collar reads ‘Modistyle’ in brown and includes a picture of a spaniel on the right hand side, the label has a border in brown which imitates stitching. The coat is lined in a pale pin satin. The coat is fitted and darted at the back to create a full skirt.

The leggings are in the same blue wool and pale pink lining. They are fastened at the top on either side with three brown buttons and at the bottom of either leg with three brown buttons. The leggings are wider at the bottom to allow them to be buttoned over boots. There is some elastic to go around the foot. The waist band is elasticated.

The hat has a wide circular brim to frame the face with a scallop edge at the top. There is part of a metal pop button on right hand side but no other fastenings remain. There is a small bow in the same blue woollen material at the back of the hat at the bottom.

This suit is part of larger gift given to the Museum by Daphne Pearce who wore the clothes as a young girl growing up in the Northern suburbs of London. The clothes are all in pristine condition and were worn from the 1950s to 1960s and show a range from baby wear to pre-teen years, approximately 12. This collection typifies the clothing of the period and clothing labels and styles of the middle classes.
