Gallery label
Potter studied fungi scientifically but also referred to them as ‘fairy rings, the myriads of fairy fungi’. In this unpublished story for a sequel to The Fairy Caravan, Xarifa and Tuppenny discuss how to address boletus mushrooms: ‘Are they fairies?’ asks Tuppennny. ‘Hush!’ said Xarifa, ‘I only know that Petronella said the mushrooms danced at night.’ [This object featured alongside a manuscript in a display Beatrix Potter's Fairyland](November 2019)
