William Thomas Lewis (ca.1746-1811) played this role for the first time at Covent Garden Theatre on the 25th January 1780. In his Memoir of Mrs. Siddons James Boaden related that Lewis: 'exceded all expectations, even from spirits like his own', and that: 'the convulsive joy of his laugh, frequently renewed... was one of the most brilliant exploits of the comedian.'
