Fashion Illustration

Artist/Maker
Place of origin

Richard Gray graduated from Middlesex University in 1990. His fashion illustrations are witty, drawn in a highly detailed manner, and often feature bold use of colour and quite surreal elements, such as mechanised figures, random elements, and fragmented backgrounds. He worked with Anna Piaggi before his graduation and his work was regularly seen in Italian Vogue. He also worked with Alexander McQueen and Boudicca and drew and ad campaign for Agent Provocateur. In 1996 he began working with BA Hons students on the Westminster University Fashion Design course.

The model in this illustration is wearing clothes by BodyMap. This highly influential fashion label was founded by Stevie Stewart and David Holah in 1982. Noted for their bold print, often in layers and with an unstructured shape, the designs grew out of, and were integral to, club fashions in the 1980s. The label was given a prominent place in the V&A's exhibition 'Club to Catwalk: London Fashion in the 1980s.'
