Paul Robertson's The Periodic Table of Bowie forms part of a series of periodic table inspired artworks. Robertson describes these works as creating an illusion of scientific relationships between celebrities and ideas. Other works using this theme include The Periodic Table of Art, The Periodic Table of Fashion and the self-portrait sculptural work The Periodic Table of Association.

Despite the title of the work David Bowie does not occupy a cell in his periodic table. Rather Bowie's cell exists as a separate offset giclée print, The Silver Cell Bowie Special Edition, printed as a limited edition of 300.

An enlarged reproduction of The Periodic Table of Bowie was included as the closing piece in the V&A exhibition David Bowie isin 2013.
