Place of origin

Cherubs were widely understood as symbols of love in the years around 1700. As decorative elements for jewellery they were stamped out from thin gold sheet and enamelled, then arranged on a background of woven hair and covered with a glittering dome of faceted rock crystal.

The slide was a very popular type of jewel at this date. Fitted with two flat loops at the back, a ribbon of silk or woven hair would be threaded through enabling it to be worn around the neck or wrist.
