The wall hanging belonged to a German family, in Kendenich, South-West Cologne; it was made by the donors Grandmother about 1940 to decorate the corner of the room where her youngest child’s cot was placed. It was made for this particular child as he was born sickly and died by the age of three. The hanging includes a prayer and is decorated with angels. The prayer reads:
Now my little child sleep in peace
Your mother's love covers you
The angels will come and keep watch
and play with your in the dreams of the night

A home-made wall hanging, used to decorate a nursery, German ca 1940
Physical description
A large rectangular shaped wall hanging. The work is cross-stitched in two shades of blue on white adia cloth. The edges of the cloth are decorated in an elaborate blanket stitch. There is a text passage in the centre of the hanging with is adorned with angles on both sides and a floral scroll under each angel and above the text are eleven stars. Across the top are four hoops with were used to hang the piece.
