Artist/Maker | |
Place of origin |
Rings set with portrait miniatures of the sovereign and other public figures were popular and widely distributed. The most expensive included finely painted miniatures, gemstones or carved cameos or intaglios but cheaper alternatives were made for a wider market. The revolving bezel of this ring is set with portraits of the Prussian king Frederick the Great, who died in 1786 and his successor Frederick William II (1786-97). The inscription 'His memory is unforgettable' refers to Frederick the Great and is a clear attempt to link Frederick William with his prestigious predecessor.
