This obijime (obi band), along with various other accoutrements belonging to a kimono set, was gifted to a member of the Royal Family by the Daughter of the Emperor of Japan in 1960. Its striking pattern, together with the use of woven viscose material, represents both the stylistic and technical development of mid-twentieth century textile production. Used for decoration as well as support this obijime would have been tied around the obi and through the knot.
