The actor, manager and dramatist Joseph George Holman (1764-1817) made his first stage appearance at Covent Garden in October 1784 as Romeo, and first played Tancred in James Thomson's play Tancred and Sigismunda at Covent Garden Theatre on 21st December 1791. The play written in 1745 centres on the tragic conflict between love and duty in which Tancred, descendant of the murdered King Manfred, and Sigismunda, daughter of Siffreidi, are embroiled.
Holman was one of the leading actors in the dispute between the actors and management at Covent Garden Theatre that led to the publication in 1800 of A Statement of the Differences Subsisting Between the Proprietors and Performers of the Theatre Royal Covent Garden He resigned or was dismissed from Covent Garden after refusing to accept the Lord Chamberlain's resolution to the dispute. He spent his later part of his career as an actor and manager in the United States where he went with his daughter in 1812, and where he died in 1817.
