Place of origin

This photograph of the great music hall stars Marie Lloyd (1870-1922), Arthur Roberts (1852-1933) and over 50 artistes and theatre staff on stage at London's Tivoli Theatre of Varieties in the Strand, was taken to commemorate the last performance at the theatre on 7 February 1913 before the theatre's planned demolition for a road widening scheme. Due to the outbreak of World War I, the demolition was postponed and the theatre stood derelict until it was eventually demolished in 1916.

The Tivoli Theatre, designed by architect Walter Emden, had opened on 24 May 1890, with 1500 seats. In 1891 Frank Matcham was brought in to re-design the building and the front-of-house facilities, and the seating capacity was increased to 1900. Walter Emden returned in 1910 and carried out further alterations, with decorations in Louis XIV style by J.M. Boekbinder.
