Historical context note
'Constable was elected R.A. on 10 February 1829. He exhibited 'Hadleigh Castle' (now in the collection of Mr. and Mrs. Paul Mellon; see No. 127 [D.234-1888] in this Catalogue) and a landscape of a "rich cottage". He paid his last two visits to Fisher at Salisbury, in July and in November. His preparations for English Landscape Scenery got under way in this year: the earliest letter on the subject to Lucas printed by Shirley (S.: L., p. 20) is dated 28 August 1829.'

The following is an extract from the text of the entry:
“Other views of the bridge and cottage are in the sketch-book No. 121 [317-1888], pp. 27, 29 and 53; the sketch-book No. 132 [1259-1888], p. 52; Nos. 297, 298 and 346.
For a more detailed drawing of the trees on the right hand side see No. 161 [256-1888]. Since the technique bears affinities to that of No. 300 [242-1888] of 1827 and also to the sketches for 'The Leaping Horse' in the British Museum (L.B. l0a and l0b, of c.1824), the drawing was perhaps made before 1830. Like them it may be a studio composition (cf. also Nos. 410 [249-1888], 411 [250-1888]).”
