Irving Penn (1917 - 2009) was an American Photographer best known for his fashion imagery that also crossed into the realm of fine art, and also portraits, and still lifes. Penn's career included work at Vogue magazine, and independent advertising. He is recognised as one of the masters of 20th century photography.
L. (Leo) Fritz Gruber (1908 - 2005) was a German advertising executive and publicist and a pivotal figure in collecting and promoting photography in the 20th century. From 1950 to 1980 Gruber organised the photokina exhibitions, Cologne, where he showed work of August Sander (1951) and Erich Salomon (1956). In 1951, he became Trade Commissioner of the German Photo Industry and initiated the founding of the German Society of Photography. Gruber is perhaps best known for his friendship and professional association with Man Ray, whom he met in Paris in 1956. He formed an extensive collection of original works and documentary material on the life and work of Man Ray, and organised solo exhibitions of his work, and publications.
