Beechwood carcase covered in boiled leathers, with decoration tooled, painted in scarlet and other colours, and gilt. Iron mounts. Rectangular with coved lid. Three hinges, the upper hinge-sides decorated at intervals with quatrefoils and travelling forwards over the lid, the central hinge-side travelling below a shaped loop handle, and hinged to a hasp fitting on the front into a lock; similar lower hinge sides travelling backwards and plain on the underside terminating on teh front in trefoil (latera) and the lock ( centre). On the lid, in a medley of flowered stems, 4 square compartments containing initials of uncertain legend in gilt. On the ends, similar squares in medleys flanked by the initials I, in gothic letter. On the rear, in similar medleys, concentric rosettes. On the base, a diamond diaper. Lining of blue damask pristine but not proper.
