Barbara Nessim: An Artful Life (V&A, 2013; Bard Graduate Center Gallery, 2014-15) 1. WomanGirl with Matching Boots 2. WomanGirl with Snood 3. WomanGirl with Turquoise and Purple Panty 4. WomanGirl Twisting with Green and Purple Ribbon From the WomanGirl series 1973 Between 1971 and 1974, Nessim created an exquisite and ambiguous series of female figure drawings she called WomanGirls. Many of the figures stand gracefully on their toes, wearing very little other than ballet shoes. Nessim compares the female role to that of a ballet dancer who presents the audience with seemingly effortless poise, rather than the long hours of gruelling training and discipline that brought her there.
