10/7/18 letter, C H Smith to His Grace
Smith thanks the Duke for his gift of 10 objects from Boughton House and states "I have very little doubt that our skilled repairers will be able to treat (the furniture) in such a way that they will be extremely valuable to our students and…..a most welcome addition to the collections….the necessary work will occupy a considerable time….."

Conservation Check by John Kitchin and Kate Hay (July 1994):
' The table top is of oak, with pine sides. There is a black French polish over veneer on the top. There is a crack down the middle of the top. Was the table originally backened?

The drawer is oak-lined, and well-made. The drawer is dovetailed in the wrong direction, evidence which suggests that it might not be English. The drawer does not fit well and has to be lifted back from underneath. The handles are possibly original but there is evidence of them having been taken off.

The legs are of pine, veneered, probably in walnut. The vaneer on the legs is lifting in places and there are sections of replacement veneer.

The stretcher has been strengthened underneath, and appears to be of soft wood, possibly pine. Adze marks show. It is partially stained underneath.
