Shatrunjaya Hill in Gujarat is one of the holiest
Jain sites. It is crowned with many temples and
shrines. The site attracts thousands of pilgrims,
who climb up to the temples from the town of
Palitana below on a stone path with over 3000
steps.
Large paintings of Shatrunjaya, like this one,
are hung in Jain temples elsewhere so that those
unable to visit the site can contemplate it.
Devotees gain religious merit by doing this.
The major temples are identifiable in this
painting. Also recognisable are key features of
the site such as the Shatrunjaya River (lower left).
A horse and carriage painted in the courtyard
of the Adishvara temple (top left) suggest that the
painting may have been made to commemorate
a navanu pilgrimage. This arduous pilgrimage
involves 99 ascents of the hill accompanied by
acts of worship and periods of fasting. Completion
of the pilgrimage was traditionally celebrated by
a procession with the pilgrimage leader riding in
a chariot.(27/09/2013) |
