Place of origin

Born in London, Sophia Snow (1745-1786) was trained in music by her father, a sergeant-trumpeter to King George II. She eloped with the actor Robert Baddeley (1733-1794) when she was eighteen and first appeared at Drury Lane Theatre on 27th April 1765, as Ophelia in Hamlet. She joined David Garrick's Company at Drury Lane Theatre in 1769 but was perhaps more celebrated for her prowess as a singer at London's Ranelagh and Vauxhall Gardens than as an actress.

Isaac Bickerstaffe's comic opera Lionel and Clarissa, or a School for Fathers was originally performed at Covent Garden Theatre on the 28th March 1768 with Miss Macklin as Clarissa, and later at Drury Lane Theatre, on the 7th February 1770 with Mrs. Baddeley in the role.
