Object history | The identity of the sitter is uncertain. Carpenter painted several Eton 'leaving' portraits, and this painting could correspond to two different portraits recorded in her account book. The identification is based on an old auction catalogue entry stuck on the back of the painting: ‘English School…181…A portrait of Alexander Boyd, Esq., in black coat on panel. |
