Gate-leg tables were placed at the side of the room when not in use, and were brought into the middle of the room and opened up for use as work or dining tables. Such space-saving furniture was frequently used in smaller 18th century houses. It is possible that this example was decorated with marquetry at a later date, possibly by an antique dealer in the 19th century, to increase its value.

| Physical description | Mahogany with inlay of other woods, the flap supported by a swinging leg. The frame and legs are inlaid with lighter coloured woods in a pattern of flowers growing out of cornucopia. The top is of plum mottled mahogany with a band of inlaid ornament around the edge in a herring-bone pattern entwined with leave and berries. It is possible that the marquetry was added later. |

| Object history | This table was one of nine items of furniture from the V&A’s collection on long-term loan to Poole’s ‘Old Town House’, the 15th century Guildhall from 1964 to 1993. The items were loaned to furnish the renovated Georgian rooms. (RP 64/981). |
