A cartouche typically consists of a decorated, often asymmetrical, frame and originally described the oval found around a Pharaoh’s name in Egyptian hieroglyphics. A number of design elements typical of this period are used: a cupid, twirling leaves, flowers and a seashell. The centre was left blank for inscription, monogram or a coat of arms.
