This monument commemorates Leonardo Salutati, who was Bishop of Fiesole, the small city on the outskirts of Florence. The base supporting the bust is carved with the Salutati coat of arms, and signed 'OPVS MINI' (the work of Mino). An inscription on the sarcophagus (not part of the plaster cast), also inscribed in Latin, identifies the monument. This can be translated as: 'The bones of Leonardo Salutati, civil and papal legate and bishop of Fiesole, while still living, erected (this monument) to himself. Farewell reader, and help me with your prayers. 1466'.
