Physical description
The relief was of unpainted terracotta, much damaged at the top, with cracks running through it. This cast was taken from the terracotta original by Andrea del Verrocchio and was formerly in the Kaiser-Friedrich Museum, Berlin, destroyed by fire in 1945.

Historical context note
The relief was of unpainted terracotta, much damaged at the top, with cracks running through it. The subject matter of the Lamentation over the Dead Christ prior to His entombment indicates that this may have been the model for a relief destined for a funerary monument.
