Place of origin

This is a plaster cast of the marble original by Mino da Fiesole in the Museo Nazionale (Bargello), Florence. Below the Virgin and Child is an angel holding a cross. The composition is closely related to that of the Virgin and Child by Antonio Rossellino on the funerary monument to Francesco Nori in the church of S. Croce in Florence. This relief has been identified with a tondo described by Giorgio Vasari in 1550 above the main entrance to the church of the Badia in Florence. The composition is closely related to that of a Virgin and Child by Antonio Rossellino (1427-1479) on the funerary monument to Francesco Nori (d. 1478) in the church of S. Croce in Florence. The plaster cast was acquired through an exchange with the Berlin Museum, but may have been made by an Italian firm based in Florence.
