The Lucca sculptor Matteo Civitali probably carved the marble original of this relief for a tabernacle, although it entered the museum collections in Florence in 1830. The flowing drapery and finely-conceived form echo contemporary Florentine paintings, such as those by Sandro Botticelli, and the relief was no doubt admired in the 19th century for these strong decorative qualities.
